Called many names such as rattle gun and torque wrench and sometimes even electronic impact wrench, the impact wrench is a very useful tool for the home mechanic.
Used primarily to loosen and tighten lug nuts and other types of nuts and bolts, the electronic impact wrench can really cut down on the blood sweat and tears you may shed during a tire rotation job.
When they were first around, impact wrenches were attached to bulky air compression units and would run off of compressed air. Many still are powered by compressed air even today.
Compressed air was a great source of power for these tools but it had it’s downsides too. A few of the worst was the fact that the hose connecting the air compressor to the impact wrench could often get filled with dust and moisture which would reduce the power output of your wrench.
Another common problem was that the air compressor was too small and couldn’t provide enough compressed air to keep the wrench working properly.
Today we have choices in cordless and even electric impact wrenches. Having these choices allows us much more flexibility in how, when and where we use our impact wrenches.
The electric impact wrench is full-featured and full-powered and there are many makes, models, and sizes available. You will just need to decide what makes the most sense for you and your needs and budget.
Obviously, one of the drawbacks of a corded wrench is that you are limited to where you can work. You will need a source of power at all times.
Then too there is the very real issue of not tripping over or accidentally unplugging the power cord of the wrench when you are using it. That can be a hassle.
Most electric wrenches are quite lightweight, usually weighing less than 7 lbs. Some of these electric impact wrenches do have adapters so that you can use them anywhere you have access to a vehicle and cigarette lighter.
Even though many models of corded impact wrenches are smaller in size, they can still pack a punch in terms of overall torque.
The whole point is that when it comes to all variety of impact wrenches: air compression powered, electric and even cordless battery-operated models, you have many choices in makes and models.
You should be willing to invest a little time and familiarize yourself with all the available features, then make a list of what you want and need. Finally, compare several models that meet your feature and budget requirements.
It can be easy to get overwhelmed with so many choices and even though the process I have outlined above might seem like a hassle, you don’t want to spend your hard-earned money on the wrong product.
Taking all of these points into consideration is your best chance of not overspending, underspending or just plain getting something that won’t work well for you. That would be a true waste of money when you buy your own electronic impact wrench.
